UCM Homecoming Results in Awards, Giving Back to Community

The University of Central Missouri’s 2019 Homecoming Royalty were introduced at half-time during the Saturday afternoon, Oct. 12, Mules football game at Audrey J. Walton Stadium. Including the names of the Greek organizations that sponsored them, they are, from left, Tyler Jolly, Delta Chi, and Logan Lee, Sigma Kappa, first runners-up; Chandler Jacobs, Sigma Pi, king, and Katie Cupp, Alpha Omicron Pi, queen; Mitch Hosty, Lambda Chi, and Olivia Waddell, Delta Zeta, second runners-up.

WARRENSBURG, MO – The annual Homecoming celebration brought the University of Central Missouri campus and the Warrensburg community together, providing opportunities for UCM and local organizations to participate in special activities, while also creating opportunities for students to give back to the community. UCM Students performed 290 hours of community service, collected 3,940 canned food items for individuals in need, 7,944 pairs of socks, and contributed to an effort that generated donations of 620 pints of blood to save lives.

The parade Saturday, Oct. 12, provided opportunities for community participation with a number of awards given for various campus and community entries. Center Stage captured first place honors among community entries. Warrensburg Christian School was second and Apple Bus, third.

Many area high school and middle school marching bands took part in the parade. Warrensburg Middle School and Warrensburg High School (Class 4) both captured first place in their divisions. Other Johnson County teams that placed were: Class 1 – Leeton High School, first place; Class 1 - Crest Ridge High School, second; Class 3 - Knob Noster High School, first place; Holden High School, second place.

UCM student organizations recognized for their parade entries were Alpha Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon, first; Lambda Chi Alpha and Alpha Sigma Alpha, second; Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Kappa Lambda, third, and Alpha Gamma Delta and Delta Chi, fourth.

Greek organizations were the winners in a large number of categories, not only in the parade but in other activities planned throughout the week.

The overall Homecoming winners among Greek organizations were: Alpha Sigma Alpha and Lambda Chi Alpha, first; Alpha Kappa Lambda and Sigma Sigma Sigma, second; Delta Zeta and Sigma Pi, third; and Alpha Omicron Pi and Sigma Tau Gamma, fourth.

In the Homecoming Royalty competition, Katie Cupp, sponsored by Alpha Omicron Pi, was crowned Queen, and Chandler Jacobs, sponsored by Sigma Pi, was named King. They were honored at halftime of the Mules football game along with first runner-up honorees, Logan Lee, sponsored by Sigma Kappa sorority, and Tyler Jolly, representing Delta chi fraternity, and second runners-up, Olivia Waddell, sponsored by Delta Zeta sorority, and Mitch Hosty, Lambda Chi fraternity.

Soc-tober was a new event designed to collect socks for distribution to Project Community Connect, local schools, WILLS and the Warrensburg Veterans Home. Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Kappa Lambda finished first; Alpha Sigma Alpha and Lambda Chi Alpha, second; Alpha Omicron Pi and Sigma Tau Gamma, third; and Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Tau Omega, fourth.

Other Homecoming events included the Spirit Window competition led by Sigma Kappa and Theta Chi, first; Alpha Sigma Alpha and Lambda Chi Alpha, second; Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Tau Omega, third; and Phi Sigma Pi and Phi Sigma Kappa, fourth.

The Cornhole Tournament was a competitive toss-the-bag-into-the box-type event that included categories for men’s and women’s teams. In the men’s competition, Lambda Chi Alpha finished first; Sigma Pi, second, and Sigma Tau Gamma and Phi Sigma Kappa, third; Sigma Sigma Sigma finished first among women’s teams, with Gamma Phi Beta, second, and Delta Zeta and Alpha Sigma Alpha finishing in third place.

Donation Creation was an opportunity for student organizations to show their creativity with charitable donations by collecting non-perishable food items that were used to create 3-D scenes representative of the Homecoming theme, “A Celebration of MuleNation.” The top four entries were Delta Zeta and Sigma Pi, first; Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Kappa Lambda, second; Alpha Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon, third; and Alpha Sigma Alpha and Lambda Chi Alpha, fourth.

Community Blood Center in Kansas City sponsored a blood drive that was open to students, faculty and staff members and the community. Greek teams recognized for their participation were as follows: Alpha Sigma Alpha and Lambda Chi Alpha, first; Alpha Omicron Pi and Sigma Tau Gamma, second; Delta Zeta and Sigma Pi, third; and Alpha Gamma Delta and Delta Chi, fourth.

A pep rally conducted on Friday evening, Oct. 11, gave campus groups an opportunity to compete for the title, Champions of Cheer. Top teams were Alpha Kappa Lambda and Sigma Sigma Sigma, first; Delta Chi and Alpha Gamma Delta, second; Sigma Tau Gamma and Alpha Omicron Pi, third; Sigma Pi and Delta Zeta, fourth, followed hy Alpha Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon.
