WARRENSBURG, MO – University of Central Missouri students are invited to a  special
presentation of the documentary film “Picture  a Scientist,” planned for 2:30 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 2 in Nahm Auditorium, located in the W.C. Morris Science Building. The
film is an initiative that is made possible by the UCM President’s Council on Diversity,
                                                   Equity and Inclusion (DEI).
According to Jay Steinkruger, Ph.D., a professor of chemistry who chairs the council,
“The film chronicles the rather disturbing experiences of four well-known female scientists
through their professional careers; the common theme they all have faced is gender
                                                   discrimination.”
While many students are not majoring in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics
(STEM) areas, Steinkruger noted, “It is important to remember that gender discrimination
is not exclusive to science professions.”
The 90-minute film will be followed by a brief conversation about its contents. While
attendance is optional for UCM students, everyone is encouraged to attend. The audience
will learn more about the types of threats that can impact a strong community environment,
but also gain new perspectives related to what can be done to make STEM fields and
beyond more diverse, equitable and open to all individuals.
UCM is committed to opportunities to build awareness of everyone’s role on campus
in DEI matters. Anyone who has questions is welcome to contact Steinkruger at steinkruger@ucmo.edu.
