                                             WARRENSBURG, MO – The Performing Arts Series and the Department of Music at the University
                                                of Central Missouri will present a world premiere performance of Soldier’s Tale/Devil’s
                                                Tale at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16 in Hart Recital Hall.
The concert will bring together musicians from the Department of Music faculty and
                                                the Kansas City Symphony, with dramatic and dance performance by faculty and students
                                                from the UCM Department of Theatre and Dance.
The evening will pair the classic dramatic work Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier’s
                                                Tale) with the modernsequel, The Devil’s Tale. Soldier’s Tale, composed in 1916 by
                                                Igor Stravinsky, is a theatrical work conceived around the writings of C.F. Ramuz
                                                and based on a Russian folk tale of a soldier who trades his violin to the devil in
                                                return for unlimited financial gain.
Devil’s Tale was written in 2013 for the same performing forces by American composer
                                                James Stephenson as an ambitious sequel to Stravinsky’s famous work, weaving the story
                                                from the point at which the original left off and circling back to the point at which
                                                the entire adventure began.
Scott Lubaroff, chair of the Department of Music and director of bands, will conduct
                                                the ensemble, and John Wilson, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance, will
                                                perform the narrated and dramatic parts.
